M.C. SKWEE-G is an underground rap artist trying to bring something new and unique to Oralndo rap and Florida hip hop. He is on his own label called ReachAround Records, but in reality he is an unsigned rap artist. Being that SKWEE-G is an underground rap music creator and an unsigned hip hop artist as well, he has plenty of flexibility and freedom to be as comically vaulgar as he wants, and he often takes advantage of this opportunity. This strays from the conventions of many up and coming artists making underground hip hop. The norm these days seems to be on emotional topics and quests for enlightenment. Many underground hip hop artists wear their hearts on their sleeves, where as SKWEE-G might wear your face over top of his face as a mask.

“Being a new rap artist or a new hip hop artist making new rap and hip hop music has it’s rewards and it’s drawbacks. For one, mass appeal is a hard thing to get. People are so used to hearing the same thing all the time, the same rap styles, same sounding beats, same song structure… when you put something new in their face it can be a hard pill to swallow. On the other hand, the listener searching for something different will love it. Orlando hip hop is going to be divided. Some of the traditionalists are going to hate it… the more liberal and experimental people in the scene will like it”

Being a rap artist isn’t all groupies and money and champagne, it’s a lot of hard work, networking and effort. SKWEE-G has just begun to work with some of the local talent. Mainly working with unsigned rappers, and people from underground hip hop music, he has played shows with The Impossibulls, MC Homeless and Nipples, ReZen, Six Feet South, Viper Pit, Fat Ross, MARZ and Injektion XL.

“Shows can be rough. Even when a crowd isn’t feeling you, you still have to come out and try to give them a show. This rings true with the Florida rap scene especially. The crowds out here are very cliquey… they come to see their friends then they are like “Ok… time to go!” … that can be discouraging. I’m sure it’s not like this every where… Tampa rap… what’s your scene like?

If you have checked out any of the photos in the gallery you will see that SKWEE-G is a white rapper. “Being a white rap artist is a funny thing… When you are getting ready to do a show, and you first step on stage, you will get some strange looks sometimes… even from another hip hop artist… usually those looks subside once the rapping actually begins.” I think being a white rap artist really doesn’t hinder you at all… I mean if someone is going to be prejudiced let them. I probably have better rhymes than them anyway.

I think this is the age of the underground rappers. with Facebook and sites like it networking and getting the word out becomes a lot easier for unsigned hip hop artists to get a similar hype that a small record label would provide. People are searching for new rap music… not just new rap music, new rap music from the rap underground. That’s how all the rap hip hop music used to be … there was no MTV playing videos, there were no big label backing for any of these guys. They went out and did the shit themselves.
